welcome, friends

solo bicycle tour 2016
seventy-five watercolors painted on 100-day solo bicycle wildcamping tour from eugene to the grand canyon, up to yellowstone and back to eugene

some details
• i started the tour in eugene june 1 and finished in eugene early september, after approximately 3500 miles
• wanting direct access to / experience of the earth, i stayed away from fee-based campgrounds on the ride, instead asking mother earth to each night show a way off the road and onto the land, to a place where i could rest the night in safety
• four of the approximately one hundred nights of the tour i spent in motels, all four instances being in the mojave desert where daytime temperatures were well into the one-hundred-teens. the other ninety-six nights i wildcamped. i didn’t have a hassle on any of those nights, though on one night i was roused from my tent (kindly, see picture 34 methamphetamine creek)
• i carried no smart devices or gps, but instead relied on paper maps cut from a national geographic atlas
• the pictures were painted in three field books bound with wire comb. scanning the pictures for this site and for printing, i’ve left off the comb. but you’ll still see the perforations, a reminder the pictures were made out there, on/off the road, in field books
• i took no photographs on the tour, and used none in making the pictures
• prints for sale (kindly, click buy prints link for info) don’t have actual perforations in the paper, just an image of perforations in the paper.
• on this site the pictures are low resolution and show jaggies (pixelation). prints for sale are high resolution, without jaggies, on heavy paper
• actual size of prints (and originals) is 7 in. x 10 in. for a single-page image (what i call single-wide), 7 in. x 20 in. for a facing-pages image (what i call double-wide). but the prints have generous (white) borders, for matting. So the actual sheet size is 12 in. x 16 in. for a single-wide, 12 in. x 26 in. for a double-wide
• on this site text in e-italics below the pictures repeats, a bit larger so you can read it, what’s handwritten on the pages

the book
• with warm help from bourland printing in eugene, the 2016 bike tour watercolors have been collected in a full color book. paperback 166 pages on quality paper with scored cover. kindly, click buy for purchasing info.

burned areas on the way to recovery have been friends. often they’re free of the KEEP OUT & NO TRESPASSING* signs that decorate the roadsides here in the Land of the Free. select of these markers i translate COME ON IN & TRESPASSING STRONGLY ENCOURAGED, and so far haven’t had a hassle. even the bear could have had me if he-she’d wanted, but didn’t seem inclined to an argument. we were close enough to shake hands, but he-she didn’t seem inclined to that either • *and my least favorite, GOVERNMENT PROPERTY. kiss my ass, we’re the people

there is a tyranny has stolen this earth from the people, and from the wild creatures too, has locked it away, fenced it round with barbed wire, every billion-acre-inch of it, for that tyranny’s own unbeautiful purposes. if one proposes to wildcamp—to live and move and sleep harmoniously on the earth without begging permission to do it—one is likely to feel a bit the outlaw • july 23 • prairie & conifers • monument, colorado
